Supervision Exercised: As required, may supervise the work of subordinate technical personnel and others assigned to assist.
Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of a superior with latitude for the exercise of independent judgment; receives detailed instructions on some complex assignments; work is subject to review usually upon completion for proper application of
network management techniques.
Classification Summary: To undertake a range of intricate technical support responsibilities concerning the functionality and upkeep of sophisticated telephony systems, alongside building access and control systems, with occasional involvement in minor tasks related to local networks, as needed.

  • Installation and maintenance of IP telephone systems: Setting up, configuring, and troubleshooting telephone systems used by law enforcement personnel within the local network.
    Building controls system management: Installing, configuring, and maintaining building automation systems used for controlling access to various building functions such as door controls, building camera and security systems.
    Minor Network infrastructure management: Configuring and maintaining RILETS network infrastructure, to ensure seamless communication and data transfer between different departments and locations.
    Security system integration: Integrating security systems such as CCTV cameras, access control systems, and alarm systems with the local network for centralized monitoring and control.
    Troubleshooting network and communication issues: Diagnosing and resolving technical problems related to network connectivity, telephone systems, and building controls to minimize downtime and ensure uninterrupted operations.
    Software updates and patches: Applying software updates, security patches, and firmware upgrades to network devices, telephone systems, and building controls to enhance performance and security.
    Compliance with regulations: Ensuring that all telecommunications and building control systems adhere to relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards, such as the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations and building safety codes, as well as adherence to CJIS 5.0
    Documentation and reporting: Maintaining detailed records of network configurations, telephone system configurations, maintenance activities, and troubleshooting procedures. Providing regular reports on system performance and compliance.
    Training and support: Providing training to law enforcement personnel on the proper use of telephone systems, building controls, and other networked technologies. Offering technical support and assistance to resolve any issues or questions they may have.
    Collaboration with RISP IT professionals, and third-party vendors to coordinate efforts, share information, and address complex technical challenges effectively.

Illustrative Examples of Temporal Tasks Performed:

  • Managing User Access Rights: The administrator is responsible for managing user access rights within the access control systems. This includes adding new users to the system, modifying existing user permissions, and removing access for employees who are no longer with the organization.
  • Monitoring Access Logs: The administrator regularly monitors access logs generated by the access control systems to identify any unauthorized access attempts or suspicious activities. They investigate security incidents and take appropriate actions, such as revoking access privileges or notifying security personnel.
  • Conducting Security Audits: The administrator conducts periodic security audits of the access control systems to ensure they are functioning correctly and complying with regulatory requirements. They may also recommend enhancements or upgrades to improve the overall security posture of the organization.
  • Monitor Access Control Policies: The access controls administrator develops and implements access control policies for law enforcement facilities, specifying who is allowed to access certain areas or resources within the building. This may involve setting up different security clearance levels based on job roles and responsibilities.
  • Monitor and assist in the use of the AFIS system.
  • Attend RILETS sanctioned events as assigned by the RILETS Supervisor.
  • To do other related work, as required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other (KSAO): A thorough knowledge of data communications networks, their operating systems, and their operational and systems capacities; a working knowledge of the equipment used to support data/telephone networks in a combined client/server computer environment. The ability to install and troubleshoot a wide variety of network and computer peripheral equipment; the ability to provide technical support to all areas of telephone and data systems; and related capacities and abilities.

Education and Experience:
Education: Such as may have been gained through graduation from a junior college or technical school of recognized standing including or supplemented by successful completion of courses in network management and computer operation.
Experience: Such as may have been gained through employment in a technical position involving the installation, evaluation, and diagnosis of local network and/or telecommunications equipment.
Or, any combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.
