Job Description

Under clinical and/or administrative supervision, and in accordance with established policies and procedures, organizes, compiles and records patient information and materials for study protocols in accordance with physician request, specifications of the research protocol and policies of the department. Labels and prepares all appropriate receptacles for blood collection. Observes patients during procedures; initiates remedial action when noting adverse reaction/behaviors. Maintains accurate records of procedures performed. Responsible for enrolling patients on clinical trials; patient education; statistical analysis; coding research data for clinical oncology trials, including Institutional Review Board (IRB) submission of clinical protocols, maintenance and follow-up information.

Responsibilities

  • Under supervision, assist the Research Coordinator in entering patients on approved research protocols; obtains informed consent from patients, establishing outreach networks in the community and outreach programs to facilitate cancer prevention trials; eligibility criteria, fills out the required reports, when appropriate, arranges for appointments, lab tests and other required research procedures. Interacts with physicians, nurses, patients and other personnel when necessary to ensure an efficient and high-quality research process for each individual patient.
  • Assist Research Nurse Manager and/or Director of the Cancer Center in the organization of the research process, handling of required tests, and completion of required reports. Remains aware at all times of patient emotional and physical welfare. Maintains accurate and timely reports and files for each patient entered into a research protocol. Enters lab data, x-rays and other clinical reports as required on the protocol flow sheet. Completes on-study forms; maintains protocol flow sheets, completes off- study forms and any other forms required by the study. Prepares monthly reports of patients who remain on study, who have gone off study, and other required monthly reports related to the research protocol.
  • Prepares the patient’s protocol folder when the patient has an appointment with the physician; obtains reports from other institutions when required and enters onto patient’s flow sheets. Prepares required reports for the IRB, the Research Committee, or other necessary reports as provided by the Cancer Center guidelines. Communicates with other research centers when the research protocol is a collaborative project with other institutions.
  • Assist in the preparation for audits as needed: organizes charts, folders, tests and ensures that all information is present.
  • Attends meetings of the Research Committee and the Cancer Center Administrative Staff as required.
  • Performs office support functions: answers telephones, records messages, and responding to and professionally solving minor complaints and problems at the same time projecting an image of highest quality in health care services maintaining confidentiality at all times.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications

  • Job requires a high school graduate with at least one to two years of additional education.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field desirable.
  • Medical terminology, anatomy/physiology, phlebotomy, and medical records training preferred.
  • Prior work experience of one to two years in a similar position is desirable in order for incumbent/job candidate to have gained familiarity with handling of confidential and sensitive information, management of research protocols, and completion of reports.
  • Intermediate MS Word and Excel.
  • Must possess experience in interpersonal skills sufficient to establish outreach networks, patient education as related to clinical trials and protocols, addressing sensitive issues for targeted patient population. May be called upon to assist other employees during temporary absences or leaves.

Compensation Statement

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $17.00 - $30.00 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
