Humacyte’s initial opportunity, a portfolio of Acellular Tissue Engineered Vessel (ATEVs), is currently approved for use in vascular trauma repair and is in late-stage clinical trials targeting multiple other applications including AV access for hemodialysis and peripheral arterial disease. Preclinical development is also underway in coronary artery bypass grafts, pediatric heart surgery, treatment of type 1 diabetes, and multiple novel cell and tissue applications. Humacyte’s 6mm ATEV for AV access in hemodialysis was the first product candidate to receive the FDA’s Regenerative Medicine Advanced Therapy (RMAT) designation and has also received FDA Fast Track designation. JOB SUMMARY:
This Intern position is a research and development role within Humacyte’s New Product Development Team. The Intern will work under the guidance of a mentor and provide research assistance with ongoing assignments and new projects. They will work closely with other scientists and engineers on projects specifically tailored to further the individual’s understanding of career field opportunities, provide hands-on research experience, and further the development of Humacyte’s regenerative medicine pipeline. Specifically, this role will be responsible for optimizing biomechanical characterization platforms and conducting biomechanical testing on tissue engineered and other vascular graft materials. This position will require attention to detail, timeliness, self-motivation, professionalism, and adaptability to a fast-paced environment as well as effective communication and organization skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Support new product development projects with both technical and organization assistance
- Perform laboratory research studies utilizing biomaterial and biomechanical techniques to design, develop, and optimize platforms for evaluating biomechanical properties of vascular grafts
- Help maintain laboratory equipment, adherence to laboratory safety protocols, and inventory management of laboratory supplies through ordering and inventory organization
- Assist members of the New Product Development team with experimental design, collection of data, and statistical interpretation of study results and conclusions
- Attend and present research findings at team and department meetings
- Be willing to learn new skills and support projects through other duties as assigned
- Current undergraduate or graduate student in a science or engineering discipline such as biology, biochemistry, or biomedical engineering
- Prior laboratory research experience highly preferred
- Familiarity with concepts and techniques related to biomaterials, tissue engineering, and cardiovascular biology such as biomaterial characterization, assay development, image analysis, prototype design and drafting, 3D printing, computational modelling or programming, and statistical analysis.
- Prior experience with laboratory research projects, data analysis, and presentation of results is required
- Prior experience with biomechanical testing highly desired
- Experience with designing and developing prototypes for research platforms is highly desirable
- Experience with data analysis and graphical display with appropriate statistical methods is a plus
- Experience with image processing, computational programming or modelling is a plus
- Experience authoring and presenting scientific reports, technical specifications, and standard operating procedures is desirable
- Will be required to regularly to sit; stand for prolonged periods of time. Also may occasionally be required to pull, lift and/or move up to 20 pounds
- Familiarity with concepts in cardiovascular biology, regenerative medicine, biomaterials and tissue engineering desirable
