Who Are We?

Biolog Lab Services founded the DNA sequencing method for microbial identification and has, for over two decades, delivered critical, time-sensitive ID for pharmaceutical, probiotic, food and beverage, and personal care manufacturing customers. At our Newark, DE site we provide laboratory services where, in addition to our phenotypic characterization tools we offer a full polyphasic approach for microbial ID, including genotypic and proteotypic services.

What’s the Job all About?

The Senior DNA Scientist is responsible for all technical and logistic aspects of sample processing, data analysis and interpretation, report generation/review, and communicating with Customers.

Principle Duties And Responsibilities

It is expected that the post holder will most influence the successful delivery of this result by:

  • Effective processing of samples to meet Customer expectations –
  • Logistically manages time and equipment to provide results within key turn-around times.
  • Prepares all laboratory supplies including manufacture of reagents and media, cleaning of tools and equipment.
  • Oversee the laboratory and warehouse stocking with consumables, the documentation of the receipt of goods and the notification to the Laboratory Management of supply needs and resource status.
  • Oversee routine maintenance, cleaning, and recordkeeping of laboratory equipment and facility.
  • Performs standard microbiology procedures including handling, growth, and purification of cultures.
  • Performs microbial identification procedures including receipt of samples, DNA extraction, PCR amplification, sequencing, performs required data entry, and runs associated equipment (e.g., sequencers, MALDI-TOF) and other laboratory services.
  • Assists with any R&D projects as assigned.
  • Follows all safety requirements for laboratory operation and use and disposal of chemical and biohazardous waste.
  • Makes suggestions for process improvements.
  • Maintains open communication with Laboratory Management.
  • Providing technical expertise to the laboratory –
  • Evaluates sample data, forms conclusions, generates and signs/verifies reports.
  • Trains employees in the areas of technical expertise.
  • Provides technical support and troubleshooting to any problems associated with lab services.
  • Oversees equipment maintenance and calibration programs, including scheduling of PMs and calibrations, reporting all deficiencies to Laboratory Management.
  • Adherence to regulatory and accreditor requirements –
  • Follows all Quality System Procedures to process samples per Customer request.
  • Works with QA to assist in audits/assessments, laboratory investigations, and implement corrective and preventative actions.
  • Writes, reviews, and/or edits SOPs, test cases and quality documents for cGMP lab.
  • Performs test cases as part of validation processes.
  • Compliance to cGMP and ISO 17025 requirements.
  • Providing Customer support and improving Customer satisfaction –
  • Assist the QC department with verification and sending of sample reports to Customers.
  • Communicates with Customers regarding sample processing and report interpretation; escalates Customer inquiries outside of this scope to management as needed.
  • Act as a Customer liaison for the company at Customer-facing events.
  • Assist in the promotion of the company.
  • Assists in responding to Customer inquiries expediently (within 24hrs).
  • Represents policies and ethics of the company as outlined in the company handbook to Customers in a professional manner.
  • Business operations
  • Coordinates purchasing requests and receipts.
  • Inventory Control and management.
  • Other duties as assigned to meet business needs

Requirements

What do You Offer?

  • Bachelor’s degree in life science with 3 years of experience in a technical role
  • Technical expertise in all laboratory functions, services, and regulations (including microbiology lab techniques, DNA sequencing, MALDI-TOF, taxonomy, cGMP/GLP, ISO 17025)
  • Familiarity with multiple regulatory requirements
  • Computer skills – all Office software and specialized software including sequencing and MALDI-TOF
  • At least 3 years of experience in a technical setting
  • Experience speaking with Customers at tradeshows, in person, and via phone call.
  • Ability to multitask with frequent interruptions is essential.

Additional Information

Generally, the work environment consists of ambient room temperatures, lighting, and traditional office equipment as found in a typical office/lab setting. Safety glasses and gloves are available and may be required for some laboratory procedures. Some aspects of the position require fine vision skills. For the most part, no heavy lifting is required to perform the job responsibilities, on average lifting 20 lbs. or less due to shipments received. Individuals may be required to occasionally travel, for example, to industry trade shows or on-site client meetings.
