General Overview

We’re looking for a Government Affairs (GA) Associate who will engage with state legislators, regulators, and other stakeholders in both existing and target markets: introducing our company, describing the benefits of our solution, and explaining how we support the State.

As a Government Affairs professional, the role requires deep understanding of how public policy is crafted, implemented, and changed over time – including how legislators and regulators interact with third parties as well as how to manage a team of lobbyists. This role requires an excellent communicator (written and oral) and have a knack for making complex issues easy to understand. This role requires an accomplished relationship builder, have a passion for technology policy, and excel at defining and executing a comprehensive government affairs strategy. This role requires someone that is highly motivated, quick on their feet, and detail oriented. Most importantly, eager to work at a company that is experiencing rapid growth and are comfortable defining direction, taking on responsibility, and working cross functionally.

The GA Associate will report to the Government Affairs Director.

Key Responsibilities

Core duties and responsibilities include the following.

  • Embodies Metrc’s Leadership Principles
  • Supports the design and implementation of state government affairs strategies in the assigned territory to advance the company’s business interests.
  • Oversees state government affairs consultants and lobbyists in your territory:
  • Identify and build relationships with state stakeholder groups in your territory;
  • Actively monitor or participate in state associations in your territory;
  • Monitor state regulator or commission meetings;
  • Monitor lobbyist in your territory to ensure both Company and state compliance requirements are being maintained
  • Facilitate communication across departments to ensure the company is provided with timely information and subject matter experts are consulted when needed.
  • Collaborate with Metrc Marketing, Communications, and consultant teams on the planning and development of state government communications, events, and campaigns, including the creation of talking points and materials.
  • Track, flag, and report legislative developments using legislative tracking software.
  • Analyze legislation and regulations to identify potential impacts to the business.
  • Build relationships with government officials and policymakers.
  • Report on key metrics, such as meetings, testimony, and bill outcomes using CRM software. Collaborate with GA Director on Annual Report.
  • Coordinate as necessary with internal and external teams on responses to risks and opportunities.
  • Support Government Affairs Director in political compliance.
  • Support Metrc’s proposals for government procurements.
  • May perform other additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS- KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • A bachelor's degree in political science, public administration, management, or a related field is required for this job.
  • Minimum two years of government affairs experience, preferably across multiple states and on technology issues (or in another regulated industry).
  • Experience working in state government or a state legislature a plus.
  • Experience working in a broad range of policy, regulatory, and legal environments a plus.
  • Ability to work independently yet collaboratively with both internal and external peers, elected officials, regulators, and constituencies; exercise judgment and discretion in matters of significance and operate with integrity and within the core values of the company
  • Demonstrated understanding of policy-making process; ability to read, analyze, and interpret legislation and regulations.
  • Familiarity with Quorum or other legislative tracking software, Salesforce or other CRM software, and MS Office
  • Ability to work well under pressure on multiple projects while producing high-quality deliverables within critical deadlines.
  • Travel required; must be willing to work evenings and weekends as needed to meet job requirements.

This position will require frequent travel approximately 30% of work time.
