POSITION TITLE: TITLE I READING COACH - ELEMENTARY REPORTS TO: COORDINATOR OF READING AND ENGLISH
OVER-TIME STATUS: EXEMPT PAY GRADE: 711
JOB SUMMARY:
The District-level Title I Reading Coach is responsible for supporting the professional growth and
development of teachers to facilitate learning and independent application of effective instructional
practices. The District-level Title I Reading Coach provides job-embedded support through classroom
observations, prescriptive feedback, modeling, data analysis, and planning across content areas. The
District-level Title I Reading Coach plans and conducts staff development based on assessed
building(s) and/or teacher needs. The District-level Title I Reading Coach works collaboratively with
the Reading Interventionists, Program Specialists, and Coordinator of Reading and English to support
professional growth and development of teachers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of teaching and learning; demonstrated thorough
knowledge of curriculum and subject matter; demonstrated knowledge of techniques and strategies
used to support adult learners; demonstrated ability to use data to increase effectiveness of teachers
through lesson plan development, professional development, and modeling best practices; ability to
develop and present ideas effectively, orally and in written form; proficient in Microsoft Office Suite to
include Word, PowerPoint and Excel and the use of other technology tools; ability to establish and
maintain effective working relationships with other administrative staff, subordinates, supervisors, the
School Board, and the general public.
This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible
amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires reaching, standing, walking;
hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for
preparing and analyzing written or computer data determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work,
and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental
conditions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
The applicant shall provide a transcript that specifies graduation from an accredited college or university
with a degree in education, supplemented by a Master's degree. Credentials shall include, at the
minimum, strong academic preparation in the field of reading, curriculum and instruction, or elementary
education is preferred. Prior experience as a reading instructional coach is highly preferred. A minimum
of five years of successful teaching experience, with at least three years of teaching reading or
English/language arts at the appropriate grade level span. The applicant must hold or be eligible for
licensure in Virginia.

- Creates positive relationships with teachers and administrators;
- Participates in building action planning working toward school goals;
- Communicates effectively with all members of the school district and community;
- Works positively toward meeting identified district and building improvement goals;
- Assesses the individual and collective needs of teachers at assigned school(s);
- Creates a comprehensive and systematic plan to support the professional growth of teachers;
- Models effective instructional techniques and strategies that engage learners;
- Provides coaching assistance through observation of instruction and delivery of timely and
- Assists with writing exemplary lesson plans to serve as a model;
- Assists teachers in creating materials that are in alignment with curriculum;
- Assists with the development of classroom, school, and division level benchmark assessments;
- Works collaboratively to help teachers analyze data and plan targeted and appropriate lessons;
- Works collaboratively with interventionist, core content program specialists to identify needs and
- Assists Program Specialists with planning and conducting high quality professional
- Supports, implements, and assesses various instructional programs and program effects on
- Stays abreast of current developments, research and new technology to enhance teaching and
