POSITION SUMMARY: The Process Engineer III is a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and ensures that all necessary components, tasks, and resources are capable of meeting established quality standards and goals, and supports department operations to ensure compliance with cGMP and OSHA regulations, company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as well as meeting production goals as directed by the Engineering Manager. Reports to the Engineering Manager, and at times the Process Engineer III may be required to manage small to large cross functional teams to complete their assigned tasks.

Process Development & Engineering responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Apply engineering and science fundamentals to create new methods and programs that lead to production and systems improvements.
- Perform new product process development including (or directing the performance of) benchwork formulation, powder characterization and encapsulation.
- Pilot batch setup and process optimization of new processes.
- Conduct process trials and lab experiments as directed by Engineering Manager and provide detailed analysis.
- Technical Transfer, following process through pilot batch.
- Support Product Development by performing R&D Assessment for New Products and Clinical Trial products.
- Maintain lab equipment and all test procedures to ensure compliance to Quality & Regulatory requirements.
- Research new process equipment and with end user(s) create equipment user requirement specifications (URS).
- Create required GMP documents to manufacture and test pilot batch and stability products.
- Research and maintain knowledge of new processing technologies applicable to Thorne processes and provide executable recommendations to leadership.
- Current powder production process improvement and optimization.
- SOP / Change Control generation & review.
- Coordinate with Production Department to improve productivity and efficiency.
- Identify gaps in equipment capabilities and recommend alternatives.
- Problem solve and work with Production in determining root causes to prevent processing issues from reoccurring.
- Perform Powder Characterization tasks and complete responses to discovered problems prior to encapsulation.
- Provide technical support as SME and advice as required in response to processing problems to other groups as requested by the Engineering Manager.
- Occasional support of MRB activities will be required.
- Occasional support of Process Validation activities will be required.
- Additional Operations Support that may include, but not limited to the following:
- Evaluate data and provide reports to management on a variety of topics as requested by the Engineering Manager.
- Coordinate with vendors concerning raw material problems and their solutions as directed by the Engineering Manager.
- Perform Corrective Action responses to various audit or production related problems as directed by the Engineering Manager.
- Experience and/or Education: Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Food Science/Engineering or similar scientific field, with documented combination of education and experience readily available. A minimum of 7+ years’ hands-on experience in Process Development & Process Engineering in FDA-regulated environment is required. Experience working with lab equipment, pilot jobs and experimentation following GLP standards is preferred. Powder handling, bulk material handling & processing experience is a plus.
- Alternatively, a candidate may have a Master’s degree in an applicable field and a minimum of 3+ years of relevant experience and, must demonstrate time management, project management, and leadership skills.
