The Biomedical Engineering Director is responsible for overseeing the selection, implementation, and maintenance of biomedical technologies and equipment. This role involves leading a multidisciplinary team, managing budgets, ensuring compliance with regulations, while driving innovation to improve patient care, operational efficiency and data accuracy.This position typically operates within healthcare facilities, requiring interaction with medical staff, administrators, vendors, Facilities, Maintenance, Information Services, Quality and patients. The role will involve travel to other Essentia healthcare sites, conferences, and industry events. This position is hybrid: Some portion of work may be completed from a home office.

Education Qualifications

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Management: Oversee and mentor a team of managers, biomedical technicians, analysts, and support staff . Provide guidance and support for professional development and performance improvement
  • Technology Development: Direct the selection, and implementation of innovative biomedical technologies and equipment to enhance patient care and clinical operations
  • Compliance and Safety: Ensure all biomedical equipment and procedures comply with regulatory standards, safety protocols, information security policies and industry best practices
  • Budget Management: Develop and manage capital and expense (maintenance) budgets, allocate resources effectively, and monitor expenditures to ensure financial efficiency while maintaining high quality standards
  • Asset Management: Ensure there is a systematic approach to managing the full lifecycle of medical equipment including tracking, maintenance, upgrades, and replacement
  • Project Management: Oversee and coordinate biomedical engineering projects from conception through completion, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to specified goals and objectives
  • Collaboration: Work closely with operations leaders, providers, and other departments to assess needs, develop solutions, and integrate biomedical technologies into the healthcare system
  • Innovation: Promote and drive innovation within the department, encouraging creative problem-solving and the pursuit of innovative technologies and methodologies
  • Training and Education: Develop and implement training programs for staff and end-users to ensure proper utilization and maintenance of biomedical equipment
  • Quality Assurance: Establish and maintain quality assurance programs to monitor and evaluate the performance and reliability of biomedical equipment, data and systems

Education Requirement

  • Bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, information technology, or a related field

Required Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum of 10 years of experience in biomedical engineering, hospital operations or technology management with at least 5 years in a leadership or management role
  • Skills: Strong leadership, communication, and project management skills. Expertise in regulatory compliance, and budget management

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of healthcare systems, medical equipment, and current industry trends and advancements
  • Certifications: Professional certification in biomedical engineering (e.g., CBET, CCE)
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to identify and resolve complex technical issues efficiently
  • Innovative Thinking: Creative approach to developing and implementing innovative technologies and solutions
  • Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, matrixed environment
  • Adaptability: Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and demands within a dynamic healthcare environment
