Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are responsible for performing technical or professional computer aided drafting and design (CADD) work and transportation management operations work developing departmental plans, maps, projects and reports.

Typical Functions

  • Performs a variety of technical, professional and administrative tasks requiring considerable background in CADD operations, transportation management operations, and departmental plans.
  • Develops and implements standards, policies and procedures for a CADD system including methods for the management of CADD files relating to the creation, standardization, modification, archival, intra- and inter-system transfer and plotting of files.
  • Responsible for all phases of CADD operations, transportation management operations, and use of engineering software related to CADD operations and electronic file management.
  • Provides training, guidance, expertise and assistance in CADD operations and transportation management operations to professional and/or technical staff.
  • Designs and prepares complex civil, architectural, mechanical, and electrical drawings for transportation projects and building structures which may include earthwork, drainage, material quantities, geometrics, and details using CADD applications.
  • Computes geometry for layouts and details of engineering drawings, plans, and maps; earthwork and material quantities for bridges, roadway surfacing, traffic controls and culverts.
  • Prepares engineering drawings utilizing CADD applications for such features as site plans; foundation floor and roof plans; highway, traffic, and bridge plans; front, rear and side elevations, cross sections, details, and schedules.
  • Supervises professional and/or technical staff in the preparation of departmental plans, maps, projects and reports.

Level Descriptor

Level II

Incumbents at this level perform technical drafting duties at the full performance level.

Level III

Incumbents at this level perform advanced technical drafting duties and/or beginning professional level design duties. Incumbents at this level may also be responsible for providing training to other employees performing drafting duties.

Level IV

Incumbents at this level perform professional design duties at the career level. This represents the full performance level of this series. Incumbents in this class may provide guidance and training to others performing drafting at all levels and those performing beginning design work.

Level V

Incumbents at this level perform design duties at the specialist level. Incumbents perform the most complex CADD tasks and may perform duties as a lead worker on projects, providing direction to other professional and/or technical staff. Incumbents at this level will routinely provide technical guidance and training to other professional and/or technical staff and may provide backup supervision in the absence of the supervisor.

Education And Experience

Level II

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of two years of experience in CADD work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting six semester hours in CADD, engineering, mathematics, or a closely related field for each year of the required experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting the completion of one month of a vocational or technical training course in CADD for each month of the required experience.

Level III

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of three years of experience in CADD work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting six semester hours in CADD, engineering, mathematics, or a closely related field for two years of the required experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting the completion of one month of a vocational or technical training course in CADD for 24 months of the required experience.

Level IV

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of four years of experience in CADD work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting six semester hours in CADD, engineering, mathematics, or a closely related field for two years of the required experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting the completion of one month of a vocational or technical training course in CADD for 24 months of the required experience.

Level V

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of five years of experience in CADD work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting six semester hours in CADD, engineering, mathematics, or a closely related field for two years of the required experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting the completion of one month of a vocational or technical training course in CADD for 24 months of the required experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Competencies

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of mathematics including percentages, algebra, plane and solid geometry and basic trigonometry; of basic engineering principles and techniques; of the techniques of mechanical drawing; of equipment; of land survey terminology; and of CADD software. Ability is required to perform CADD work using engineering principles, techniques, computer programs, and equipment; to express ideas clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; to follow written and oral instructions; to plan and organize work; to work with architectural and engineering scales; and to concentrate on accuracy of details.

Additional Job Description

This position is responsible for daily interaction within the Mapping Branch in the preparation, coordination and the processing of incoming right-of-way projects, setting schedules, preparing estimates and tracking the status of project related activities. Will utilize the Right-of-Way & Utilities Division Policy & Procedures as well as, project management and contract administration methodologies. Will operate ODOT's MicroStation CADD System as well as, accompanying procedures for us.
