Job Description
Job Summary: The Director-Emergency Services manages a fast-paced emergency department and demonstrates flexibility, advanced critical thinking skills and adeptly resets priorities as needed. Collaborates with the Executive Director, service Medical Director(s), physician groups and the multidisciplinary healthcare team to define, focus, integrate and coordinate the day-to-day operations in the Emergency Department at Loma Linda University Medical Center-Murrieta (LLUMC-Murrieta) a 112 bed acute care hospital under Loma Linda University Health (LLUH) System with Primary Stroke Center Certification and ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) Receiving Center designation. Achieves and maintains credible collegial working relationships with pre-hospital care providers, multiple law enforcement agency staff, as well as with LLUMC-Murrieta hospital inpatient services staff and physicians. Stays abreast of community status in regards to emergency situations, catastrophic incidents and mass casualties. Collaborates with ED leadership and physician staff and initiates procedures in accordance with each unique situation. Ensures quantity and quality of licensed and unlicensed staff twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week. Ensures department is survey-ready at all times and in compliance with requirements of applicable planning, regulatory, inspecting agencies and hospital and department policies. Participates in strategic planning process and aligns departmental goals and objectives with the mission, vision and values of the organization. Actively supports the continuous journey to create a culture that has the best patient outcomes and the best work environment. Develops, implements and maintains recruitment/retention and succession planning programs that promote a personally fulfilling workplace environment, culture for quality patient care and positive patient experience. Performs other duties as needed.
Education and Experience: Master of Science Degree in Nursing required, Master's degree in progress acceptable with quarterly reports or, Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and a Master of Science Degree in healthcare, finance, or education required. Master's degree in progress acceptable with quarterly reports. Minimum five years emergency nursing experience required. Minimum of one year of prior management or supervisory experience preferred.
Knowledge and Skills: Substantial knowledge of state and federal healthcare regulations related to emergency services, finance, performance improvement, quality, patient safety, evidenced-based clinical practice standards, medical staff structure and legal aspects of care required. Thorough knowledge of healthcare regulations and survey process required. Demonstrates advanced level of leadership, supervision, management, problem-solving methodologies and communications skills. Exhibits professional behavior at all times. Able to speak, read and write legibly in English (and Spanish preferred) with professional quality; use computer, printer and software programs necessary to the position, e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, electronic medical record, electronic event reporting program; relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and/or enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; lead, supervise, teach and collaborate; accept direction; think critically; use sound judgment based on factual information and clinical knowledge; work independently with minimal supervision; meet deadlines; perform basic math and statistical functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; organize and prioritize workload; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place/patient care; discern temperature variances through touch; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records, and written documents necessary to position.
Licensures and Certifications: Active California Registered Nurse (RN) license required. Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications issued by the American Heart Association required. Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) preferred.
