Job Summary

The Facility Outpatient Complex Coder position handles coding and abstracting for complex outpatient surgical and observation services across all Banner hospitals, including academic, trauma, and high-acuity settings. Reviews records, assigns ICD-CM/PCS and CPT codes, completes APC assignments, and ensures accurate, ethical coding per regulations and national guidelines.

Job Description

• This position includes the highest level of complexity accounts for an ambulatory surgery center.
• Reviews health record documentation and assigns diagnoses and/or surgical procedure codes on all outpatient complex records using ICD CM/PCS and CPT4 coding classification systems.
• Ensures ethical and accurate coding in accordance with all regulatory requirements and nationally recognized coding guidelines.
• Accurately codes diagnostic and procedural information, including modifiers, in accordance with national coding guidelines and appropriate reimbursement requirements.
• Consults with medical providers to clarify missing or inadequate record information and to determine appropriate diagnostic and procedure codes.
  
  
  

Qualifications

• Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or equivalent coding certification.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in surgery coding within a hospital and ambulatory setting.
• Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II, and DRG/APC reimbursement systems.
• Familiarity with EMR systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner, Meditech).
• Ability to interpret operative reports and surgical procedures accurately.
• Strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology related to surgery.
• Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills.
• Attention to detail and ability to meet productivity benchmarks.
