Position Overview

Reporting to the Director of Talent & Culture, the HR Generalist will support the overall operations of Human Resources at City Garden, with a particular focus on recruitment and employee relations.

We are seeking a highly organized, personable HR professional with excellent judgment who ideally has experience in recruitment and employee relations in a school environment. The HR Generalist will be grounded in anti-bias, antiracist values and is energized by being on the front lines of a charter public school that is reimagining education through these lenses.

Responsibilities

Recruitment & Hiring Process (40%)

  • Coordinates the logistics of hiring, including but not limited to:
    • Drafting job descriptions
    • Posting open roles to our Careers page and ad sites
    • Reviewing resumes and selecting candidates
    • Conducting initial phone screens
    • Serving as the main touchpoint for candidates through the interview process
    • Drafting contracts and compensation packages based on salary schedule
  • Manages the full recruitment cycle across multiple roles involving multiple stakeholders at the same time, evaluating candidates, ensuring the interview process runs smoothly, candidates are thoughtfully stewarded through the process, and hiring goals are met in a timely manner
  • Conducts targeted, thoughtful candidate research and outreach when needed
  • Proactively maintains a pipeline of exceptional local and national talent by attending networking events, conferences, and offering informational conversations about City Garden even when not actively hiring for open positions
  • Takes initiative to stay updated on effective methods of recruitment and retention of school talent, particularly in the charter and Montessori spaces
  • Facilitates the decision-making process among stakeholders and hiring managers

Employee Relations (35%)

  • Provides guidance to City Garden administrative and building staff, school leadership, and teachers on school policies, regulations, procedures, and compliance requirements, conducting research on laws and regulations as needed
  • Manages interpersonal challenges, conflict resolution, disciplinary actions, and grievances among staff, conducting investigations as needed related to employee misconduct, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and other issues that may arise
  • Trains managers and staff on employee performance management tools, providing support where necessary and ensuring all evaluation deadlines are met

Other HR Activities (25%) as assigned by the Director of Talent & Culture.

Qualifications & Characteristics

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • A passionate belief in CGMS’s mission and values
  • Understanding of systemic racism and other forms of oppression, and demonstrated success integrating antiracism principles into action as an HR professional
  • 3+ years of experience in a Human Resources function, ideally a blend of recruitment and employee relations (school environment preferred). Will also consider candidates coming out of an executive search or staffing firm with an education focus
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage a full recruitment cycle across multiple roles with multiple stakeholders at the same time
  • Experience facilitating difficult conversations with staff in various functions, conducting investigations of alleged employee misconduct, and managing termination/nonrenewal of employment
  • Excellent judgement with an ability to exercise discretion and impartiality
  • Proficient with applicant tracking systems or candidate management platforms, and LinkedIn Recruiter
  • Fluent in email, Google Suite, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, calendar management, electronic and physical file management and personal technology

Preferred:

  • SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP), SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP), or SPHR/PHR credential
  • Experience with SparkHire video interview and/or ATS platform
  • Knowledge of federal and state labor laws, including FMLA, Worker’s Compensation, COBRA, and Unemployment claims
  • Understanding of Missouri school policies and procedures, and required certifications across public school functions

Compensation & Benefits

This position offers a starting salary range of $50,000 to $55,000 per year as well as robust benefits, including medical, dental, pension (vested after five years), school admission preference (discounted preschool and before/after care), and 21 days annually of Sick Time/Personal Time Off, in addition to federal holidays and school breaks.
