Title: Artist Mentor

Department: ECF Art Centers

Location: ECF Art Center and community venues

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Program Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to 3:30 pm; weekend availability based on employment and art events

Supervisory Responsibility: ECF Artists

Position Summary

Provide direct supervision, training and evaluation of participants as assigned by Program Supervisor. The Artist Mentor will work with a group of ECF Artists to focus on their professional development goals as related to their ISP and interests related to art, evaluate their interest in employment and current skill set, and identify partnerships in the community for employment and volunteer opportunities based on ECF Artist ISP Goals. Provide Instruction for ECF Artists/clients at integrated art vendor/sales events including but not limited to how to prep and work for sales events and track sales of merchandise. Standard hours are Monday to Friday but will include some weekend events depending on sales, volunteer, and employment opportunities. These will be scheduled at least a month in advance and may be at off-site locations.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provide direct supervision, training, and evaluation to artists that will enhance their ability to seek employment and volunteer opportunities as identified in their ISP and of their interest and choice as related to art. Services should include outings and activities in the community to build partnerships that will support working toward goals of integrated employment and volunteering, including working at art fairs and sales events with artists may also include building on skills to access the community and transportation, public transportation. Staff is to remain engaged with the artists during outings and activities during work hours.
  • Teach new skills identified in the individual service plan (ISP) artist assessment including but not limited to communication, vocational and employment skills, cognitive skills, social-emotional skills, and community access. Employment skills may include but are not limited to, photographing artwork, creating an inventory list, pricing artwork, packaging artwork, communicating with the public at sales events, writing resume, applications, submitting artwork to exhibitions and communicating about artwork and ECF Art Centers
  • Record information regarding artists’ progress using appropriate assessment tools for development of individual program plans. Provide input to case management staff in order to assist in planning and establishing relevant goals for assigned artists. Take into account addressing the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse artists. Implement services and support in accordance with Lanterman Act and Person-Centered Thinking Practices. Submit written progress reports on a monthly basis, or as needed, and unusual incidents reports as needed. Track and report sales of artwork to Gallery Supervisor
  • Prepare comprehensive lesson plans in advance for community activities. Lesson plans should involve activities based on client choice and ISP goals related to their interest in employment and professional development as related to art
  • Follow ECF guidelines for reporting medical emergencies, suspected abuse or neglect, and unusual incidents to counseling and supervisory staff. Adhere to ECF’s Injury Prevention Safety Program
  • Use public transportation or ECF van or personal vehicle to transport participants to community activities. Maintain vehicle logs and regular check of maintenance reporting any issues immediately
  • Provide supervision during participant arrival, departure, break and lunchtime. Ensure attendance recordings are accurate and complete
  • Provide behavioral intervention to participants through appropriate methods as designated through NCI training and overall goals. Attend in-service trainings and staff meetings
  • Be available to help promote the Art Centers during work hours for visitors and guests. This includes but is not limited to informing the public of the Art Center mission and services when the public is touring Art Center studio. Greet the public and assist artists with presenting and discussing their work with the public.

Other Duties

  • Comply with ECF’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program, Safety and Medical Emergency Procedures. Ensure safe use and operation of tools and/or equipment.
  • Comply with ECF policies and procedures, including mandated reporting requirements.
  • Observe regular, on-site work hours. Regular and reliable attendance is required for this position.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education/Licenses/Certifications: Bachelor’s degree in Art or Related Field: ex. Art Therapy, Art Education, Special Education, Art History, Studio Art

Experience: One year working with individuals with developmental disabilities.

Knowledge/Abilities/Skills:

  • Knowledge in one art specialty area
  • Skills necessary to assist artist in carrying out their art practice and art goals, may include but is not limited to: teaching, facilitating, guiding, encouraging, listening, advocating
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to teach adult artists
  • Availability to teach all artists in the Art Center.

Requirements

  • Driving is an essential function of this position. Proof of valid California driver’s license, reliable transportation, evidence of state-mandated car insurance, and insurable driving record are required. While driving for work, should a need arise, the employee’s insurance is deemed primary and ECF’s coverage is secondary.
  • Provide evidence of a negative TB test initially and every three years thereafter.
  • Obtain and maintain NCI, First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Ability to use public transportation or personal vehicle to transport artist for community outings.
