This is a position that requires specialized and responsible work in the operation of a sophisticated communications and information retrieval system in the Fire District during an assigned shift. Work is performed under the general direction of a shift supervisor.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Supports and carries out the Fire District’s Mission Statement, and its goals and objectives.

2. Insures compliance with Rules & Regulations, Collective Bargaining Agreement, General Orders, the Dress Code Policy, and SOGs.

3. Operates a sophisticated multi-channel communications system maintaining contact with fire and rescue units.

4. Dispatches EMS and Fire vehicles, personnel and equipment, to answer emergency requests from 911.

5. Provides information concerning the location of residences, businesses, roads and streets, water hydrants, and other related information requested or needed by field personnel.

6. Dispatches all calls received from alarm companies.

7. Reviews routine, emergency personal telephone requests for assistance concerning EMS and Fire related matters involving public safety. Determines actions to be taken. Contacts various agencies when necessary.

8. Processes completed paper work and data as system requires.

9. Maintains and records the activities of dispatched units.

10. Prepares and submits reports and, studies and maintains records pertaining to the Communications Division.

11. Makes inquiries and receives data pertaining to law enforcement activity through computer terminals.

12. Attends meetings as required.

13. Provides training for new employees.

14. Performs verbal skills in a clear and understandable manner.

15. Performs work in a professional manner.

16. Clearly guides callers in crisis through necessary interrogation procedures and the provision of telephone prearrival instructions.

17. Efficiently and effectively organizes multiple tasks and complicated situations and activities.

18. Functions within the team framework of public safety and EMS systems.

19. Elicits and assimilates caller information to prioritize and properly summarize the information into a format used to inform public safety responders.

20. Demonstrates skilled use of the EMD and appropriate compliance to interrogation questioning sequences and pre-arrival instructions.

21. Demonstrates the ability to appropriately assign response configurations based on information gleaned from callers. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES):

1. Ability to elicit information necessary for proper dispatching from citizens in a distressed or confused condition.

2. Knowledge of countywide streets, fire hydrants and landmarks.

3. Ability to read countywide street maps and provides clear direction and instruction to District personnel.

4. Ability to exercise sound judgment and cooperate with all District employees and the general public.

5. Ability to read, writes, speak, understand and communicate clearly and effectively.

6. Ability to accurately type.

7. Ability to make and use sound decision-making principles.

8. Ability to conduct him/herself with a high level of integrity consistent with the District's Rules & Regulations.

9. Knowledge of the District's Rules & Regulations and the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

10. Ability to effectively use the District's CAD system, computer hardware and applicable software.

11. Ability to effectively use the District's multi-channel radio communications system.

12. Knowledge of the District's SOGs, radio practices and procedure.

13. Sufficient manual dexterity to develop skill in the operation of equipment utilized in the system.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school graduate or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma. Experience in the use of a multi-channel radio system and computer/CAD system; or education and experience which provides the above knowledge, skills and abilities. (A comparable amount of training, education or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.)


LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS:

Valid Florida State Driver’s License

EMD Certification


ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:

1. Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction).

2. Acceptable hearing (with or without correction)

3. Ability to efficiently enter and retrieve computer data.

4. Ability to sit at a desk and view a display screen for extended periods of time.

5. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.

6. Ability to access file cabinets for filing and retrieving data.

7. Walk stands bends and stoops. (Reasonable accommodations will be made for otherwise qualified individuals with a disability.)


ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

1. Works inside in an office environment under stressful conditions.

2. May be required to work at a field command post.
