Description

Maxwood Furniture is a rapidly growing multi-brand furniture company with a strong presence across DTC ecommerce and third-party marketplaces. We are on a mission to revolutionize how families shop for home furnishings by combining great design with a seamless online experience.

We are seeking an experienced Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to join our executive team and lead the strategic evolution of our technology stack and digital commerce platforms. The ideal candidate is an innovative, hands-on technology leader with deep Shopify expertise and experience managing development teams, infrastructure, and digital product roadmaps in a high-growth, multi-channel environment.

About The Role

As CTO, you will be responsible for defining and executing the company’s long-term technology strategy, overseeing all aspects of ecommerce platform development, systems integration, data analytics, and technical operations. You will play a critical role in scaling our digital presence, improving site performance, expanding omnichannel capabilities, and enhancing customer experience across all touchpoints.

You will lead a cross-functional team of developers, product managers, UX designers, and technical vendors, while collaborating with marketing, brand, and operations stakeholders to align technology with business goals.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Vision

  • Define and implement the company’s technology roadmap to support ecommerce growth, scalability, and innovation across multiple brands.
  • Oversee the architecture and evolution of our Shopify-based ecommerce ecosystem, including themes, apps, APIs, and third-party integrations.
  • Lead the evaluation and implementation of new technologies (e.g., headless commerce, personalization, A/B testing tools) to enhance user experience and drive conversion.
  • Own digital analytics and experimentation strategy to support data-driven decision making.

Team Management & Execution

  • Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing in-house and outsourced development team.
  • Collaborate with product and UX teams to translate brand vision and customer needs into compelling, scalable solutions.
  • Manage development workflows, including sprint planning, code review, QA/testing, release management, and documentation.
  • Establish and enforce coding best practices, quality standards, and DevOps processes (GitHub/Git Actions, CI/CD).

Platform & Performance Optimization

  • Oversee optimization of site speed, mobile responsiveness, and SEO performance across all brand sites.
  • Ensure secure and reliable ecommerce operations, including data privacy, third-party integrations, and performance monitoring.
  • Guide technical implementation of advanced Shopify features (Combined Listings, Bundles, Cart Transform API, etc.).

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with brand managers and marketing teams to translate business initiatives into technical deliverables.
  • Support inventory, logistics, and operations teams by integrating back-office systems as needed (ERP, OMS, CRM).
  • Serve as a key technology advisor to the executive team and participate in company-wide strategic planning.

Requirements

Required:

  • Proven leadership experience in a senior technology role, preferably in ecommerce or DTC retail.
  • Deep hands-on expertise with Shopify, including custom theme development, Liquid templating, and app integration.
  • Proficiency with JavaScript/React, New ERP Integrations, and headless commerce strategies.
  • Proficiency with Database & Server Administration.
  • Proven experience leading hybrid teams both in-house and agency towards success.
  • Strong understanding of AI and LLMs with experience creating in-house AI teams/culture.
  • Experience with version control (Git, GitHub) and modern development workflows.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage cross-functional teams and complex projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

Preferred

  • Experience in a multi-brand or high-growth startup environment.
  • Experience with Shopify app development and third-party API integrations.
  • Familiarity with project management tools like Monday.com.
  • Expertise in CRO, split testing, personalization, and KPI tracking.
  • Strong understanding of ecommerce operations, customer journeys, and marketing automation.
