About The Role

The Controller is responsible for leading and managing the accounting operations of Sunco Lighting and its affiliated entities. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, sound internal controls, and regulatory compliance across all areas of accounting. In addition to managing the day-to-day accounting function, the Controller will provide financial insights to leadership, build and mentor the accounting team, drive automation and system improvements, and support strategic planning initiatives.

This role requires a detail-oriented leader who thrives in a dynamic environment and is able to take full ownership of financial operations while also contributing to long-term financial planning and operational investment decisions.

What You'll Do

Accounting Operations (Core: 80%)

• Lead all aspects of financial accounting including general ledger, journal entries, month-end and year-end close processes.
• Prepare and maintain timely, accurate financial reports including P&L statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports across multiple entities (Sunco, LSM, GST, Enayat).
• Oversee AP/AR functions, credit evaluations, and payment processing, ensuring internal controls and accuracy.
• Reconcile company accounts (banking, credit cards, Amazon, Shopify, Walmart) and resolve discrepancies across channels.
• Supervise accounting for inventory costing, fixed assets, depreciation, and in-transit shipments.
• Maintain compliance with sales tax, income tax, franchise tax, 1099 reporting, and regulatory filings.
• Coordinate with external CPA firms and manage year-end audits, tax submissions, and compiled financial statements.
• Ensure legal and regulatory compliance across all jurisdictions, including customs, insurance audits, workers comp, and census reporting.
• Supervise and audit daily activities of Senior Accountant and Accounting Clerk; provide coaching and process improvements.
• Build, document, and improve internal accounting processes for repeatable and scalable workflows.
  
  

Staff Leadership & Team Development

• Develop a strong accounting team structure; support strategic headcount planning and hiring for the department.
• Train and empower senior accounting staff to operate independently with minimal oversight.
• Implement cross-functional collaboration and strong communication across departments (Ops, Supply Chain, Sales).
• Serve as a proactive mentor, providing performance feedback and leadership development.
  
  

Systems, Tools & Process Improvement

• Evaluate and implement accounting tools and automation solutions to improve efficiency and reduce manual errors.
• Lead upgrades and integrations for financial systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Rippling, Shopify, NetSuite if future plans).
• Design and document SOPs for key workflows including AP, AR, reconciliations, and tax compliance.
• Regularly audit active vendor payments to identify and reduce unnecessary spend; initiate this process independently and review with relevant department heads.
  
  

Strategic Finance & Operational Investment (20%)

• Prepare and present rolling forecasts, projections, and variance analyses to leadership monthly.
• Support budgeting and cost analysis for key departments; provide insight to guide operational decisions.
• Initiate and evaluate operational investment opportunities that provide measurable ROI; make final recommendations and execute within agreed authority levels.
• Participate in business planning discussions and align accounting activities with company growth goals.
  
  

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA strongly preferred.
• 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience, including experience managing others.
• Demonstrated experience in full-cycle accounting and multi-entity financial reporting.
• Knowledge of GAAP, regulatory filings, and tax compliance across multiple states and/or countries.
• Strong proficiency with accounting systems (e.g., QuickBooks Online), Excel, and reporting tools.
• Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
• Proven ability to train, lead, and scale an accounting team.
• Experience in eCommerce, supply chain, or high-growth private companies preferred
