The Transportation Department of the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is seeking an Intern in the Model and Data Development program area to assist with carrying out travel modeling activities. NCTCOG develops, maintains, and disseminates the only regional travel model for all transportation agencies in the Dallas-Fort Worth region. The majority of model development work is done internally, and the Model and Data Development program area has forged a collaborative work environment with transportation agencies in the region and strives to do so nationally. Ideal candidates should attend school in the Dallas-Fort Worth region and be able to work at least 20 hours per week.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assisting with transportation data cleanup
  • Drafting for supervisor review, technical documentation for computer programs
  • Working with supervisor to run and analyze the regional transportation model
  • Creating for supervisor review, traffic micro simulation models
  • Working with supervisor to perform data analysis using existing databases

Required Skills

    • Basic knowledge of transportation or urban planning
    • Basic understanding of Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
    • Basic knowledge of data analysis and statistics
    • Basic knowledge of economic impacts of transportation projects
    • Familiarity of Python programming language
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook
    • Good communication, both verbal and written, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to listen to and follow instructions, coordinate with other team members, and present ideas
    • Detail oriented, highly organized, with an ability to manage multiple assignments/tasks and work well in a deadline-driven environment without diminishing quality of work
    • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
Required Education And Experience

  • Must be attending an accredited college or university in a degree-seeking program during employment, preferably a Master’s degree program
  • No work experience required

Starting Salary

Minimum of $17.00 per hour

The planning area for transportation includes the 12 counties of Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hood, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, and Wise.
