Designer – Physical Product Design - #1413908

Uncommon Goods

Date: 19 hours ago
City: Brooklyn, NY
Salary: $70,000 - $80,000 per year
Contract type: Full time

You're a designer who doesn't just sketch pretty things, you bring them to life. You think in form, function, and feasibility. You lead brainstorms that actually spark ideas. You present concepts with clarity and conviction. You're here to raise the bar.

At Uncommon Goods, we create joyful, design-forward objects—from clever kitchen tools to conversation-starting home goods. We're looking for a Product Designer with an industrial design background to contribute to new product development

You'll contribute to original product design, working cross-functionally with buying, creative, and sourcing teams to deliver exclusive, manufacturable, unmistakably "UG" products.

What You'll Own:

  • Concept, prototype, and develop exclusive products from idea to final production.
  • Participate in brainstorming and pitch new ideas to product development and merchandising teams.
  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders (buyers, sourcing, creative, ops) to ensure your designs are not just beautiful—but viable.
  • Oversee the full design process—from mood boards and sketching to CAD, specs, pre-production approvals, and launch.
  • Maintain a sharp POV on trends, customer behavior, and commercial viability.

You'll Thrive in This Role If You:

  • Have 4-6 years of experience in industrial design, consumer goods, or lifestyle product development.
  • Are fluent in CAD tools (SolidWorks, Rhino, or Fusion 360) and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Are a strong communicator—visually and verbally—with the ability to defend ideas and influence decisions.
  • Have a portfolio that shows full lifecycle design work: from sketch to shelf, with real-world production and impact.

Extra Credit For:

  • Working knowledge of manufacturing (overseas or domestic), packaging, and sourcing.
  • Passion for sustainability, values-based design, or storytelling through product.

Why Join Now?

We're scaling smart and rebuilding better. You'll have ownership, creative freedom, and a chance to lead the kind of design work that actually gets made—and makes people smile.

To Apply:

Please include a link to your portfolio with your application.

In your cover letter, briefly answer these two questions:

  • What's a product you designed that successfully made it to market—and what role did you play in making that happen?
  • Name 1 product from the UG website that is a strong example of good design.
  • Share 1 product that is missing from the website that you think UG should carry.

We're not looking for essays—just thoughtful, real answers that help us understand your design brain and leadership style.
